Looking back at the Lehman Brothers collapse of 2008, it’s amazing how quickly it all happened. In hindsight there were a few early-warning signs, but the true scale of the disaster publicly unfolded only in the final moments before it became apparent that Lehman was doomed.
There were few early indicators of Lehman’s plight. Insiders however, were well aware: In late 2007, Goldman Sachs placed a massive proprietary bet against Lehman which would be known internally as the “Big Short”. (It’s a bet they would later profit from during the crisis).
In the summer 2007 subprime loans were beginning to perform poorly in the marketplace. By August of 2007, the commercial paper market saw liquidity evaporating quickly and funding for all types of asset-backed securities was drying up.
But still — even in late 2007, there was little public indication that Lehman was circling the drain.

that more intense droughts and heat waves will cause famine and water

The hearing,
titled "Examining the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Process," was convened by the House Committee on Science, Space and
Technology—the same folks who recently demonstrated their inability to grasp the idea that the world's climate varies across different regions and who informed us that warmer weather didn't bother the dinosaurs, so what's all the fuss about?
GOP Intellectual Discourse?
In
principle, there's nothing wrong with assessing the methodology of such
an important and influential report. But, in one of those
quintessential moments of Washington double-think, Chairman Lamar Smith
(R-TX)—who accuses the IPCC of creating data to serve a predetermined
political agenda—summarized the hearing's conclusions a day before it
even began. "The IPCC does not perform science itself and doesn't
monitor the climate," Smith told a reporter, "but only reviews carefully selected scientific literature."
So, small wonder that Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), the ranking Democrat on the committee, offered the opinion:
Take me to your leader. Who? That's what I asked?
While
the topic of today's hearing is a legitimate one, namely, how the IPCC
process can be improved, I am concerned that the real objective of this
hearing is to try to undercut the IPCC and to cast doubt on the validity
of climate change research.
This article written by Frosty Wooldridge regarding the demise and plight of the once mighty American city we fondly refer to and recall as Motown or Motor City ,the symbol of the nation's industrial strength , should break your heart. Because it breaks all of ours, as we yearn for those times when it was so much more. For many it was "My Girl" a song that gave us sunshine on a cloudy day, or in a cold month of May.

The Tragedy of Detroit, Michigan, Immigration and the Great Society

For 15 years, from the mid 1970's to 1990, I worked in Detroit, Michigan . I watched it descend into the abyss of crime, debauchery, gun play, drugs, school truancy, car-jacking, gangs and human depravity. I watched entire city blocks burned out. I witnessed graffiti explode on buildings, cars, trucks, buses and school yards.Trash everywhere!
Detroiters walked through it, tossed more into it and ignored it. Tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands today exist on federal welfare, free housing and food stamps.
With Aid to Dependent Children, minority women birthed eight to 10, and in one case, one woman birthed 24 children as reported by the Detroit FreePress—all on American taxpayer dollars.
A new child meant a car payment, new television and whatever mom wanted. I saw Lyndon Baines Johnson's “Great Society” flourish in Detroit . If you give money for doing nothing, you will get more hands out taking money for doing nothing
Mayor Coleman Young, perhaps the most corrupt mayor in America , outside of Richard Daley in Chicago, rode Detroit down to its knees... He set the benchmark for cronyism, incompetence and arrogance. As a black man, he said, "I am the MFIC." The IC meant "in charge". You can fill in the MF for yourself. Detroit became a majority black city with 67 percent African-Americans. In 2013, Detroit features nearly a 90 percent minority-majority population.
As a United Van Lines truck driver for my summer job from teaching math and science, I loaded hundreds of American families into my van for a new life in another city or state.
Detroit plummeted from 1.8 million citizens to 700,000 today. At the same time, legal and illegal immigrants converged on the city, so much so, that Muslims number over 300,000. Mexicans number 300,000throughout Michigan, but many work in Detroit . As the whites moved out, theMuslims moved in.Welfare became a way of life.
As the crimes became more violent, the whites fled. Finally, unlawful Mexicans moved in at a torrid pace. Detroit suffered so much shoplifting that grocery stores no longer operate in many inner city locations.You could cut the racial tension in the air with a knife! Detroit may be one of our best examples of multiculturalism: pure dislike and total separation from America.
Today, you hear Muslim calls to worship over the city like a new American Baghdad with hundreds of Islamic mosques in Michigan, paid for by Saudi Arabia oil money. High school flunk-out rates reached 76 percent last June, according to NBC's Brian Williams. Classrooms resemble more foreign countries than America. English? Few speak it! The city features a 50percent illiteracy rate and growing.
Unemployment hit 28.9 percent in 2009 as the auto industry vacated the city. In Time Magazine's October 4, 2009, "The Tragedy of Detroit: How a great city fell, and how it can rise again," I choked on the writer's description of what happened. "If Detroit had been ravaged by a hurricane, and submerged by a ravenous flood, we'd know a lot more about it," said Time reporter Daniel Okrent. "If drought and carelessness had spread brush fires across the city, we'd see it on the evening news every night. Earthquake, tornadoes, you name it, if natural disaster had devastated the city that was once the living proof of American prosperity, the rest of the country might take notice.
“But Detroit, once our fourth largest city, now 11th and slipping rapidly, has had no such luck. Its disaster has long been a slow unwinding that seemed to remove it from the rest of the country.Even the death rattle that in the past year emanated from its signature industry brought more attention to the auto executives than to the people of the city, who had for so long been victimized by theirdreadful decision making."
As Coleman Young's corruption brought the city to its knees, no amount of federal dollars could save the incredible payoffs, kickbacks and illegality permeating his administration. I witnessed the city's death from the seat of my 18-wheeler tractor trailer because I moved people out of every sector of decaying Detroit .
"By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit 's treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services," Okrent said. "The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers' union to reject a philanthropist's offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans , unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit today, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That's worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent.”
At the end of Okrent's report, he promised to write more about Detroit, "That's because the story of Detroit is not simply one of a great city's collapse, it's also about the erosion of the industries that helped build the country we know today. The ultimate fate of Detroit will reveal much about the character ofAmerica in the 21st century. If what was once the most prosperous manufacturing city in the nation has been brought to its knees, what does that say about our recent past? And if it can't find a way to get up, what does that say about America’s future?"
As you read in my book review of Chris Steiner's book,"$20 Per Gallon", the auto industry won't come back. Immigration will keep pouring more and moreuneducated and unskilled third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit, thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America . If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit . Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs.
You have already seen it in Madrid , Spain , London , England and Paris , France with train bombings, subway bombings and riots. As their numbers grow, so will their power to enact their barbaric Sharia Law that negates republican forms of government, first amendment rights, and subjugates women to the lowest rungs on the human ladder. We will see more honor killings by upset husbands, fathers and brothers that demand subjugation by their daughters, sisters and wives. Muslims prefer beheadings of women to scare the hell out of any other members of their sect from straying. Multiculturalism: a perfect method to kill our language, culture, country and way of life.
If you think Mexicans and Muslims will eventually fit right into America, you have another reality check coming. One look at the constant violence and segregation in Los Angeles portends a sobering future for all Americans. Chicago suffers endless minority gun killings. “Black flash mobs” in major cities run around looking for white Americans to beat up and kill. Detroit features honor killings, female genital mutilation, arranged marriages and violence toward gays by Muslims. Those accelerating situations represent only symptoms of what the future holds for Americans in most cities dominated by endless immigration. Detroit, Michigan presents us with a peek into our future as a multicultural morass.

Serbia and Bosnia Flooding Disturbs Land Mines From Region's 1990s War
18 May 2014 (Associated Press) – Floodwaters triggered more than
3,000 landslides across the Balkans on Sunday, laying waste to entire
towns and villages and disturbing land mines leftover from the region's
1990s war, along with warning signs that marked the unexploded weapons.
The Balkans' worst flooding since record keeping began forced
tens of thousands of people from their homes and threatened to inundate
Serbia's main power plant, which supplies electricity to a third of the
country and most of the capital, Belgrade.
Authorities organized
a frenzied helicopter airlift to get terrified families to safety
before the water swallowed up their homes. Many were plucked from
rooftops. Floodwaters receded Sunday in some locations, laying
bare the full scale of the damage. Elsewhere, emergency management
officials warned that the water would keep rising into Sunday night.
"The situation is catastrophic," said Bosnia's refugee minister, Adil Osmanovic.
Three
months' worth of rain fell on the region in three days, producing the
worst floods since rainfall measurements began 120 years ago. At least
two dozen people have died, with more casualties expected.
The
rain caused an estimated 2,100 landslides that covered roads, homes and
whole villages throughout hilly Bosnia. Another 1,000 landslides were
reported in neighboring Serbia.
This is a disaster of unmeasured proportions - again, we are seeing the
climate chaos being caused by global warming leaving no region on the
planet untouched. Where are our leaders? Hmm...
Impossible to Conserve Nature As Is, Thanks to Climate Change
A U.S. government-backed guide for land managers says global warming requires a fundamental shift in conservation

American) – When President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Grand Canyon
in 1903, he famously admonished the attending crowd to avoid meddling
with the landscape. "Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it," he
said. True to Roosevelt's message, America's conservationists have since
focused on maintaining the status quo, or at least restoring ecosystems
to their natural state. But due to the growing impacts of climate change, this can no longer continue, according to a new guide for land managers backed by multiple state and federal agencies. "Addressing
the growing threats brought about or accentuated by rapid climate
change requires a fundamental shift in the practice of natural resource
management in conservation," states the document, released yesterday by
the National Wildlife Federation in partnership with the National Park
Service, U.S. EPA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
the U.S. Geological Survey and several other federal agencies and
nongovernmental organizations. "While managers traditionally have
looked to the past for inspiration, increasingly we will be faced with
future conditions that may have no historical analogs," it states. The
guide is intended to demystify climate adaptation for habitat and
wildlife managers. It provides a step-by-step process evaluating how
ecosystems may be vulnerable to climate change and how conservation
goals might be altered for the best possible outcome.
‘No longer possible’ to maintain nature's status quo
'This is extreme': Wildfires strike early, hard in Southern California

Carlsbad,
California (CNN) – Thousands of homes, a university campus, a nuclear
plant, a Legoland and parts of one of the military's biggest and busiest
bases: All have been evacuated due to a rare confluence of fast-moving
wildfires scorching Southern California.
Cal Fire Division Chief Dave Allen said nine fires have burned 9,095 acres.
The
Golden State has seen many such blazes before. But these are different
because they sprung up so quickly, spread so fast, and hit months before
the traditional height of wildfire season, making them menacing in the
short- and long-term.
CNN meteorologist Jennifer Gray forecasts
what the area might expect as the summer gives way to fall: "This is
only going to get worse."
San Diego County district supervisor
Bill Horn said Wednesday evening that eight fires were burning in the
region, seven of which popped up that day.
Investigators haven't
yet determined the cause of these fires. But Horn hasn't seen anything
like this -- so many fires, so quick, all of them separate -- in at
least 20 years. That this is happening in May, not July or October, is
even more confounding to him.
"I'm sure it could be by chance,"
the clearly skeptical supervisor said. "… I just think there's too much
of a coincidence here." […]
Carlsbad alone has issued 23,000
evacuation notices. Thousands of students won't have classes on Thursday
due to the continuing threat; California State University-San Marcos
canceled all activities through Friday, including commencement.
Numerous roads have been shut down, while others have become clogged
with people trying to escape. […]
This is very early in the season so the road ahead is not promising. Add on to this that the state faces the worst drought in decades. Could they run out of water? Then there's that radioactive water coming from Japan - all too scary and frightening.

plot of a horror movie: humans wake up one day to discover that
chemical changes in the atmosphere are dissolving away parts of their
bodies. But for small marine life known as sea butterflies, or
pteropods, this is what's happening off the West Cost of the U.S.
Increased carbon in the ocean is melting away shells of sea butterflies,
which are tiny marine snails that underpin much of the ocean's food
chain, including prey for pink salmon, mackerel, and herring.
"We
did not expect to see pteropods being affected to this extent in our
coastal region for several decades," said William Peterson, Ph.D., an
oceanographer at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA)'s Northwest Fisheries Science Center who co-authored the findings
in a paper for the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Sampling sea butterflies in the species Limacina helicina
off California, Washington, and Oregon in the summer of 2011,
researchers found that over 50 percent of onshore sea butterflies
suffered from "severe dissolution damage," according to the paper.
Offshore, 24 percent of individuals showed such damage.

– Much media attention has been directed at the possibility of an El
Niño brewing this year. Many outlets have drawn comparison with the
1997-98 super El Niño. So, what are the odds that El Niño will occur?
And if it does, how strong will it be?
To track El Niño, meteorologists at the NOAA/NWS Climate Prediction Center (CPC) release weekly and monthly updates on the status of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The International Research Institute (IRI) for Climate and Society partner with us on the monthly ENSO release and are also collaborators on a brand new “ENSO blog” which is part of www.climate.gov (co-sponsored by the NOAA Climate Programs Office).

ENSO is a first for operational ENSO forecasters, and we hope that it
gives us another way to both inform and interact with our users on ENSO
predictions and impacts. In addition, we will collaborate with other
scientists to profile interesting ENSO research and delve into the
societal
dimensions of ENSO. As far back as November 2013, the
CPC and the IRI have predicted an elevated chance of El Niño (relative
to historical chance or climatology) based on a combination of model
predictions and general trends over the tropical Pacific Ocean. Once the
chance of El Niño reached 50% in March 2014, an El Niño Watch was issued to alert the public that conditions are more favorable for the development of El Niño.

– There is no doubt the climate is changing. Each of the past three
decades has been warmer than the previous one, and the vast majority of
scientific evidence points to this being caused by mankind's reliance on
carbon-based fossil fuels.
While understanding weather patterns
and the risks associated with major weather events has always been
critical to the insurance industry, climate change has recently brought
the need for better modelling of future weather into sharp focus.
According to the World Bank,
weather-related losses and damage have risen from an annual average of
about $50bn in the 1980s to close to $200bn. Lloyd's knows this all too
well, the damage wrought on the US by the hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and
Wilma in 2005 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012 to name but a few all brought
significant claims to the insurance market.
Many types of
business we insure are affected by climate change. There are the obvious
ones such as property, catastrophe and crop insurance. But Superstorm
Sandy taught us that the reach of extreme weather is far greater than
that. The destruction Sandy brought to the eastern US seaboard was
responsible for claims of up to $300m in lost fine art, a consequence of the many expensive US beachfront homes damaged.
Modelling has shown that the approximate 20cm of sea-level rise at the
southern tip of Manhattan Island increased Sandy's surge losses by 30%
in New York alone.

(Reuters) – Scientists are predicting the disappearance of another vast
ice shelf in Antarctica by the end of the century that will accelerate
rising sea levels.
The Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf fringing the
Weddell Sea on the eastern side of Antarctica has so far not seen ice
loss from global warming and much of the observation of melting has
focused on the western side of the continent around the Amundsen Sea.
But new research from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine
Research in Germany says the 450,000-sq-km ice shelf is under threat. "According
to our calculations, this protective barrier will disintegrate by the
end of this century," said Dr Harmut Hellmer, lead author of the study,
published in the journal Nature this week. The huge ice
shelves that float on the seas fringing Antarctica provide a buffer
against warming waters eating away at the base of the much larger
glaciers behind them that sit on the land. "Ice shelves are like corks in the bottles for the ice streams behind them," said Hellmer. "They reduce the ice flow. "If,
however, the ice shelves melt from below, they become so thin that the
dragging surfaces become smaller and the ice behind them starts to
move." Hellmer and his team predict the melting of the
Filchner-Ronne shelf could add up to 4.4 mm per year to rising global
sea levels.
