(Reuters) - It is one of science's enduring mysteries: what caused the worst mass extinction in Earth's history. And, no, it is not the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Scientists said on Thursday that huge amounts of carbon dioxide spewed from colossal volcanic eruptions in Siberia may have turned the world's oceans dangerously acidic 252 million years ago, helping to drive a global environmental calamity that killed most land and sea creatures.
The researchers studied rocks in the United Arab Emirates that were on the seafloor at the time and contained a detailed record of the changing ocean conditions at the end of the Permian Period. Read More.

The hearing,
titled "Examining the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Process," was convened by the House Committee on Science, Space and
Technology—the same folks who recently demonstrated their inability to grasp the idea that the world's climate varies across different regions and who informed us that warmer weather didn't bother the dinosaurs, so what's all the fuss about?
GOP Intellectual Discourse?
In
principle, there's nothing wrong with assessing the methodology of such
an important and influential report. But, in one of those
quintessential moments of Washington double-think, Chairman Lamar Smith
(R-TX)—who accuses the IPCC of creating data to serve a predetermined
political agenda—summarized the hearing's conclusions a day before it
even began. "The IPCC does not perform science itself and doesn't
monitor the climate," Smith told a reporter, "but only reviews carefully selected scientific literature."
So, small wonder that Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), the ranking Democrat on the committee, offered the opinion:
Take me to your leader. Who? That's what I asked?
While
the topic of today's hearing is a legitimate one, namely, how the IPCC
process can be improved, I am concerned that the real objective of this
hearing is to try to undercut the IPCC and to cast doubt on the validity
of climate change research.

With Global Warming?,” the answer to which was apparently that it’s a
“silly debate,” a “scam” and “modern witchcraft.” The panel was
moderated by Joseph Bast of the Heartland Institute, a leading
climate-change denial group funded in large part by major corporations,
and included Steve Milloy, a longtime climate change denier who is now
working for the coal company Murray Energy; Marc Morano of the
oil-industry funded Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, a Heartland
Institute “expert” and former a staffer for climate skeptic Sen. Jim
Inhofe; Marlo Lewis of the anti-regulation Competitive Enterprise
Institute; George Landrith of Fronteirs of Freedom, another oil-industry
funded climate change denial group; and for “balance,” Shannon Smith,

One of the biggest laugh lines came from Morano, who mocked Rep. Barbara Lee’s warning
that the effects of climate change in the developing world could force
women into poverty and prostitution. “So now, everyone in the audience
worried that your mom’s sister or daughter is going to become a hooker,

Does this mean that Santa Claus is soon going to have move his headquarters and manufacturing facilities from the North Pole? The problem: Where does he move them to? Will it affect Christmas deiveries?
For sure, there is a tone of sacacism in these questions, but it is actually one of the implications that stems from the melting of the polar ice caps. Poor Rudolf. We are not going to revisit the climate debate in these commnents as we think that the Live Science article provides all the material you need to further evauate the issue. Instead, what we really want to bring to your attention are the pictures of the melting ice caps and the land that is now being exposed. Pictures again speak volumes of the gravity of the warming global climate making it easier to understand how positive feedback loops are formed to further agrivate this problem. How the deniers want to explain away such evidence, tests the boundaries of all reason. But no doubt they will try. Meanwhile, we have the pictures. Dr Peter G Kinesa November 7, 2013
Who do you believe regarding climate change? Who wins the climate debate? Science? Business? Or Politicians? Common sense tells us that scientists should present more objective findings and conclusions. Whereas the latter two groups have tarnished reputations for portraying reality in a way that is biased towards their own vested interests. Put simply - they have no credibility.
But science itself is not perfect as methods, observations and conclusions may be flawed leading to bad information and resultant decisions. So we cannot accept science at face value as well. What to do?
Our best answer to this dilemma is based on applied concepts of corroboration and logic.
Logically the polluting chemicals, heat and radioactive outputs of our human economic and social activities must have some impact on the environment in various ways. That's just a straightforward physical cause and effect linkage. Let's not forget too that the climate is a dynamic state entity - it has always been in some form of change through-out time. Clearly, these are both logical pluses supporting climate-change proponents.
There are two forms of corroboration to consider; personal experience and third party information. Most of us by now have experienced some displeasures from the possible consequences of global warming, be it heat waves, storms or extreme cold. Further evidence comes from various global media sources reflecting increased frequency and trends in temperature increases major storms, floods, wildfires, insect populations, glacial shrinkage, on and on around the world. These two types of corroboration overwhelming suggest that climate-change proponents are correct.
In summary, whether we apply logical common sense or corroborative evidence techniques, we come up with one obvious answer Add in the long history and discrediting character of climate-change deniers, then this becomes an open and shut case. Leading to remaining questions of how bad is it and what should we expect when?
