SPECIAL REPORT: "The #American Dream, Destitution, Despair - #DETROIT"

This article written by Frosty Wooldridge regarding the demise and plight of the once mighty American city we fondly  refer to and recall as Motown or Motor City ,the symbol of  the nation's industrial strength , should break your heart. Because it breaks all of ours, as we yearn for those times when it was so much more. For many it was "My Girl" a song that gave us sunshine on a cloudy day, or in a cold month of May.

So I guess you'd say; what could make me feel this way...?

The Tragedy of Detroit, Michigan, Immigration and the Great Society

Description: Description: cid:CC0FB9A43B8By Frosty Wooldridge

(Frosty Wooldridge is a US journalist, Michigan State University graduate, writer, environmentalist, and six continent world traveler, often referred to as a Paul Revere - A Hero For Our Times)

http://pwa2000.blogspot.ca/p/all-abot.html

For 15 years, from the mid 1970's to 1990, I worked in Detroit, Michigan . I watched it descend into the abyss of crime, debauchery, gun play, drugs, school truancy, car-jacking, gangs and human depravity. I watched entire city blocks burned out. I witnessed graffiti explode on buildings, cars, trucks, buses and school yards.Trash everywhere!
Description: cid:2.3451956344@web161208.m
Detroiters walked through it, tossed more into it and ignored it. Tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands today exist on federal welfare, free housing and food stamps.
With Aid to Dependent Children, minority women birthed eight to 10, and in one case, one woman birthed 24 children as reported by the Detroit FreePress—all on American taxpayer dollars.
Description: cid:3.3451956344@web161208
A new child meant a car payment, new television and whatever mom wanted. I saw Lyndon Baines Johnson's “Great Society” flourish in Detroit . If you give money for doing nothing, you will get more hands out taking money for doing nothing
Mayor Coleman Young, perhaps the most corrupt mayor in America , outside of Richard Daley in Chicago, rode Detroit down to its knees... He set the benchmark for cronyism, incompetence and arrogance. As a black man, he said, "I am the MFIC." The IC meant "in charge".  You can fill in the MF for yourself.  Detroit became a majority black city with 67 percent African-Americans.  In 2013, Detroit features nearly a 90 percent minority-majority population.
Description: cid:4.3451956344@web161208.m
As a United Van Lines truck driver for my summer job from teaching math and science, I loaded hundreds of American families into my van for a new life in another city or state.
Detroit plummeted from 1.8 million citizens to 700,000 today. At the same time, legal and illegal immigrants converged on the city, so much so, that Muslims number over 300,000. Mexicans number 300,000throughout Michigan, but many work in Detroit . As the whites moved out, theMuslims moved in.  Welfare became a way of life.
Description: cid:5.3451956344@web161208.m
As the crimes became more violent, the whites fled. Finally, unlawful Mexicans moved in at a torrid pace. Detroit suffered so much shoplifting that grocery stores no longer operate in many inner city locations. You could cut the racial tension in the air with a knife! Detroit may be one of our best examples of multiculturalism: pure dislike and total separation from America.
Today, you hear Muslim calls to worship over the city like a new American Baghdad with hundreds of Islamic mosques in Michigan, paid for by Saudi Arabia oil money. High school flunk-out rates reached 76 percent last June, according to NBC's Brian Williams. Classrooms resemble more foreign countries than America. English? Few speak it! The city features a 50percent illiteracy rate and growing.
Description: cid:6.3451956344@web161208.m
Unemployment hit 28.9 percent in 2009 as the auto industry vacated the city. In Time Magazine's October 4, 2009, "The Tragedy of Detroit: How a great city fell, and how it can rise again," I choked on the writer's description of what happened. "If Detroit had been ravaged by a hurricane, and submerged by a ravenous flood, we'd know a lot more about it," said Time reporter Daniel Okrent. "If drought and carelessness had spread brush fires across the city, we'd see it on the evening news every night. Earthquake, tornadoes, you name it, if natural disaster had devastated the city that was once the living proof of American prosperity, the rest of the country might take notice.
Description: cid:7.3451956344@web161208.m
“But Detroit, once our fourth largest city, now 11th and slipping rapidly, has had no such luck. Its disaster has long been a slow unwinding that seemed to remove it from the rest of the country. Even the death rattle that in the past year emanated from its signature industry brought more attention to the auto executives than to the people of the city, who had for so long been victimized by their dreadful decision making."
Description: cid:8.3451956344@web161208.m
As Coleman Young's corruption brought the city to its knees, no amount of federal dollars could save the incredible payoffs, kickbacks and illegality permeating his administration. I witnessed the city's death from the seat of my 18-wheeler tractor trailer because I moved people out of every sector of decaying Detroit .
"By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit 's treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services," Okrent said. "The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers' union to reject a philanthropist's offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans , unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit today, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That's worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent.
Description: cid:9.3451956344@web161208.m
At the end of Okrent's report, he promised to write more about Detroit, "That's because the story of Detroit is not simply one of a great city's collapse, it's also about the erosion of the industries that helped build the country we know today. The ultimate fate of Detroit will reveal much about the character ofAmerica in the 21st century.  If what was once the most prosperous manufacturing city in the nation has been brought to its knees, what does that say about our recent past? And if it can't find a way to get up, what does that say about America’s future?"
Description: cid:10.3451956344@web161208.
As you read in my book review of Chris Steiner's book,"$20 Per Gallon", the auto industry won't come back. Immigration will keep pouring more and moreuneducated and unskilled third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit, thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America . If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out  of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit . Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs.
Description: cid:11.3451956344@web161208.
You have already seen it in Madrid , Spain , London , England and Paris , France with train bombings, subway bombings and riots. As their numbers grow, so will their power to enact their barbaric Sharia Law that negates republican forms of government, first amendment rights, and subjugates women to the lowest rungs on the human ladder. We will see more honor killings by upset husbands, fathers and brothers that demand subjugation by their daughters, sisters and wives. Muslims prefer beheadings of women to scare the hell out of any other members of their sect from straying. Multiculturalism: a perfect method to kill our language, culture, country and way of life.
Description: cid:12.3451956344@web161208.

If you think Mexicans and Muslims will eventually fit right into America, you have another reality check coming. One look at the constant violence and segregation in Los Angeles portends a sobering future for all Americans.  Chicago suffers endless minority gun killings.  “Black flash mobs” in major cities run around looking for white Americans to beat up and kill.  Detroit features honor killings, female genital mutilation, arranged marriages and violence toward gays by Muslims.  Those accelerating situations represent only symptoms of what the future holds for Americans in most cities dominated by endless immigration.  Detroit, Michigan presents us with a peek into our future as a multicultural morass.

NASA "Our planet is evaporating" (Video)

"LET ME KNOW WHAT LIFE IS LIKE ON JUPITER AND MARS... IN OTHER WORDS"

For a moment, let's not debate what the cause is behind the increased trend in wildfires and lands now exposed to this threat. Rather lets acknowledge that this trend is not good because not only of the explicit life-threatening dangers posed, but also because it places arable farmlands and wildlife in greater jeopardy. This is not good economics by any means. (Remember, Bugonomics last month?)

Many years ago, CPA firms would claim their advisory leadership advantage and unique value proposition was through "getting behind the financial statements numbers". Perhaps economists and policy-makers should steal a page from the CPAs' slogans book and get behind the GDP numbers - because when they do, they should discover that real economic capacities are burning up or evaporating. These are the physical capacities that will drive the GDP numbers of tomorrow. Neat idea?

Maybe this same approach could have perhaps been helpful with urban management too - Detroit, New Orleans, Newark and so forth and thus slowing the evaporation of such centres.

Hmm - "getting behind the numbers" - it has a catchy ring to it.

Projected increase in potential evaporation through the year 2100, relative to 1980, based on the combined results of multiple climate models. The maximum increase across North America is about 1 mm/day by 2100. This concept, potential evaporation, is a measure of drying potential or 'fire weather'. An average increase of 1 mm/day over the whole year is a big change, one we can put in specific terms: We consider a 1 mm/day increase in PE to be an 'Extreme' event for fires, something like 2012 in Colorado. By these projections, fire years like 2012 would be the new normal in regions like the western US by the end of the 21st century. Graphic: NASA

DETROIT Files for Bankruptcy - What Next?

DETROIT files for Bankruptcy - What Next?

- we need to grow up fast"

First Financial Insights
July 20,2013

While the news may come as a shock to some, this much anticipated event is just another cut in the demise of this once iconic American city. It was the industrial centre, a heart and soul of culture, a symbol of America and its "enterpride" that had worked to win wars and put the nation at the top of the global economic stage. Its primary automotive products changed, forever, the way we worked, lived and transported the essentials of commerce and livelihoods, from here to there.

The old saying was "what's good for General Motors is good for America," signifying just how critical this industry and city had once been to the nation's economy. Many questions and words will be written regarding the whys, hows and whats of the industry's turn of fortune and the city's plight. Some could point to globalization, poor management, foreign competition, social decay or a host of other reasons and combinations thereof. Still what is clear is, despite the best minds, efforts and resources: it happened! - creating even bigger concerns - How many more Detroits are there? Is this just the beginning? What next?

As for sure, sound and stable economies cannot be linked to only soft, intangible and abstract industries, such as social media and entertainment - hot air can only be exchanged for so much, and particularly, as the scarcity of key economic raw materials begins to play a larger hand in global economic activity.

Perhaps, it is also time to wake-up and have a close look at how global competitors run their economies to create their sustainable comparative advantage. Apparently, they have relied less on the ideals of free enterprise and apply "National Business Strategy" to set the actions, programs and goals for their endeavours, which in some cases, results in de facto slave labour conditions. Leading us to believe that free trade - is really an oxymoron. Free for whom?

So there is certainly much more analysis that needs to be done -including what and why levels of government and management failed to address this problem in the early stages. It is a situation that did not just occur overnight, but was apparent to many and allowed to fester for many years. And how many more cities are waiting in the wings?

So we will continue to monitor the events here, and also what appears to be an emerging trend nationally, More importantly we stress, this is a global economic disease that has spread to European countries such as Cyprus, Portugal and Greece, along with nations in the Middle East who are at the forefront of social  and political upheaval.

Is the abstructionist's economy finally falling into the grips of a finite planet's physical constraints. The logical conclusion is yes. So - What Next???

THE JIM ROGERS BLOG : Asia Headed for Doghouse - most of the good Opportunities will be in Asia???

Here's where the conclusions of the abstract and physical economic models diverge to the extreme. This primarily is because the one sees the world through the "Looking Glass" of neo-classical economic theory, while the other sees the world through the finite constraints of physics and absolute mathematics. Hence, we anticipate both the Japanese and Chinese economies heading towards unprecedented collapses, bringing the rest of the region to its knees.

Why? Simply, because these are relatively resource poor nations and declining at an exponential rate on a per capita basis. Remember, we are in the peak oil period and then headed for a rapid decline rate period that could be even higher than the expected 4% per annum. Unless Jim knows something we don't -like how to run an economy with without cheap energy, then water, then food, then....

It’s not like the Republicans are much better, Dems complain of “Debt Clock” in Congressional hearing room

This number is much worse, and getting worse.

debt 2 cc

Many times we have mentioned that the actual debt number exceeds over $100 trillion. That number comes from Bill Gross; PIMCO, who also includes contingent and off-balance sheet liabilities in the total. If this number doesn't scare you, maybe the trend chart  in the linked article will - shooting straight upwards? What you don't see is the other side - that is the resource assets required to repay this debt running in the inverse direction.

So here's a question for those high IQ types - how do you repay all this debt when the resource side is depleted? Realistically, major problems will start to occur long before complete resource exhaustion occurs.

Sleep well, while you can.

Is France Business Hell - Against Crony Capitalism

Is France Business Hell?

Actually, I don't know if it is or isn't,  for I have never had the opportunity to do business with the Devil. What we do know is that the breakdown in civil safety nets, contracts and trust - leads to social unrest; and in turn political upheaval; and finally geo-political engagements and hostilities. Europe has a long history of strife amoung its member countries and most people foolishly think that today things are now different.

We don't. For in desperate times, caused by water, food and materail shortages, unemployment, overpopulation, climate change and economic instability, desperate people do desperate things. So just add France to the long list of countries that are showing signs that are now well past "peak prosperity" and are now heading towards the social-political-economic graveyard. Where their cities will look like Detroit, and their beaches host more fishermen than  tourists.

Marc Faber : Buy Gold To Protect Against The Next Crisis

Marc Faber : Buy Gold To Protect Against The Next Crisis

Oh My Gosh! Why all the Bugginess over Gold? It does nothing for our real economy, nothing to assure our on-going subsistence and expends currency from the real wealth of the planet. A net negative to planetary wealth.

Marc in this telephone interview is again taking on a senior role at the Pearly Gates, by saying or suggesting two things. Gold is insurance against systemic risk. And investors should hold up to 25% of their portfolio assets in gold. There is no way on earth that he can predict or state this just based on past events. The future is filled with a vast number of permutations, as regards the possibilities and possibilities of outcomes. One is that the price gold collapses more that everything else for any number of reasons. To say gold is some form of insurance against anything is - JUST PLAIN STUPID!

That said, obviously the 25% gold allocation is also not so wise for non-speculative portfolios.

When the crap really hits the fan, folks are going to be thinking more about gas, water, food and medicine. Things get pretty basic.
But let's not get into the prediction game here.

What could go wrong with the housing recovery in 2013?

What Could go Wrong with the US Housing Recovery in 2013?

Lots. Read and analyze these charts for yourself in the linked blog. Housing bubbles, particularly like the kind leading up to 2008 meltdown, do not correct themselves in just a few short years. This is at least a decade long struggle, that will be further hindered by increases in rates at some point, collapsing all asset values. And hence, all forms of construction.

Then there's the ripple effects on renovations, big box retail, industry employment and so on. This is a huge hangover for Main Street, caused by he biggest party of drunken Wall Street sailors in history. Yet, NO ONE WENT TO JAIL...

Detroit Continues Its Descent into the World of Mad Max

Detroit Continues Its Descent into the World of Mad Max

WHAT HAPPENED?

detroit

Want to look into the future? America's future? The global future? Then look no further than Detroit. Or Newark, Buffalo. Akron, New Orleans or many other American cities. And we can ask so many questions? Like why do they look like Third World nations? Is this really the richest country on Earth? Or how's about a simple; What happened to America?

If anything tells us that the metrics used by economists; measures such as GDP, are meaningless as a means of managing real world activties, then these everyday examples of inner city decay, should prove the point beyond any doubt. Sure it is well documented that Americans migrated to the cozy suburbs miles from the cities, as the automobile provided a means of escape. But add to this, the stripping away of the industrial heartland by Walmart and China, the shifting to a service-based economy, and the conversion of homes into ATM machines; these all created and contibuted to this civil destruction. So the crabs that are now left in the inner-city barrel, have  little hope of rising above theses dark depressed streets of despair - the streetcar named desire does not travel their anymore. Stellaaaa...

Some believe that these cities will be revived when gas prices drive the automobile to its inevitable extinction. But will the jobs return  to these cities? Will the manufacturing base return back from China? Unlikely, as the scarcity of  raw materials is going to make any sort of manufacturing anywhere on this planet difficult. In the end, the only thing still missing from this permanent picture of the American Dream and Global future is - MAX!

And how sad, this all is...
