A NEW ATLANTIS- #MIAMI Sinking!

Miami’s rising sea level is an enormous problem

In Miami Beach, Henry Briceño, a professor at Florida International University’s Southeast Environmental Research Center has been trying to raise awareness on how global warming is affecting his own community.

By Chiamaka Nwakeze
Miami’s rising sea level is an enormous problem(Science Recorder ) – Eighteen American scientific societies including the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have reached a consensus on global warming, namely that it is occurring and is largely attributable to human activities. These rising temperatures create significant changes in weather patterns across the globe, resulting in stronger hurricane storms, loss of natural habitats, species extinctions and rising sea levels.
In Miami Beach, Henry Briceño, a professor at Florida International University’s Southeast Environmental Research Center, has been trying to raise awareness on how global warming is affecting his own community.
Briceño has begun to sample the water around Miami Beach and has found high levels of nutrients such as nitrogen, which indicates that the quality of the water is poor. And like many scientists, Briceño, believes that the poor water quality is a result of climate change and global warming.

Never go Home? - #Fukushima

INSPECTING FUKUSHIMA. A handout picture provided by Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco), shows Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshimitsu Motegi (L) pointing to contaminated water storage tanks during his visit at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Okuma, northeast of Tokyo, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, 26 August 2013. Never Go Home?

Could you imagine not being able to ever return home again for whatever reasons? Most of us would certainly be very upset and perturbed by such a situation. But that's exactly what the people who lived near the Fukushima nuclear plant are facing.

One leading Japanese Physicist remarked that had events spun out of control, then most of Northern Japan would have been uninhabitable. They are still not out of the woods yet, as there are many risks around the site that could trigger more disasters. Consequently there are many concerns that arise from this on-going situation that could also trigger a devastating financial crisis in Japan that would ripple through-out the world. Moreover, should Japan make a effort to rebuild from all this, then you can expect sharp increases in global interest rates to emerge.

Call it the Fukshima Financial Contagion - but that may be just the wake-up call we need to realize how fragile the overall energy situation is becoming.

#Fukushima Radiation - WHO's At Risk?

Fukushima
Radiation
Hitting the West Coast-
Who’s At Risk?
Read and View Video

This is not the time to get overly frightened and upset, nor is it the time to bury our heads in the sand and either hope or rationalize the dangers away. This above linked article provides anecdotal evidence with links to a variety of other stories, reporting the specific harms being done to the environment on the West Coast, possibly from the radioactive water of Fukushima. Is it possible that a distinct concentrated ocean current of this water had or could form causing such damage? - Yes, according to some scientific sources.

Unfortunately, we cannot verify these scientific findings, conclusions and predictions one way or the other. That is one reason why we believe greater effort is needed from the world community. Moreover, the information that is coming out of Japan over the past two years has been inconsistent, contradictory and at times thought to be misleading. Contrast the effort here, to the eagerness and hyperbole surrounding efforts  to bomb Syria over its chemical weapons - and that was not even remotely threatening to North American shores.

Again, we are not going to judge whether the risk is great or being overblown by media vigilantes, but what we do know is that this nuclear disaster has still not been contained after two years. There are indications too, that the spillage is getting worse. The Japanese Prime Minister has recently called out for global assistance. No one seems to know when this disaster is going to be fixed. These are all not adding up to a positive position for the world's third largest economy - as there are additional dangers of a major catastrophic financial fall-out spinning out of any escalated and protracted events. That would be a global event! .

There are many known unknowns in play here, but here's the big unknown, unknown that should really concern the world.

What if there is another tsunami?

To be quite frank, that or similar events, at this fragile point of time, is the biggest concern. We need, with the greatest urgency, to bring this  situation under control....

NOW!

#Fukushima - Out of Control?

The Japan Times
Fukushima

OUT OF CONTROL?

See More Here

Just when you think that problems at this event could not get any worse, particularly after two years of site work. - They do!

As this linked article reports the radioactive water releases are up an astonishing 6500%.Not only is the future of Japan in the lurch, but so might be the North American western coastline as this water is sure to touch its shores. Should it be highly contaminated then you could overlay  in a few months the Fukushima wasteland pictures on cities all along the coast.

Everyone fears what could happen should the catastrophe spread to the rest of the reactors on the site Apparently there are also 23 similar reactors in North America And this is no longer a Japanese problem. Rather, it is the world's biggest priority.

So, where is the world???

#Fukushima - Nuclear Wasteland (In Pictures)

A woman paying a brief visit to her home walks under a sign reading 'Nuclear power – the energy for a better future', at the entrance of the empty Futaba town. Decades ago the citizens ofFutaba took such pride in hosting part of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex that they built a sign over a promenade proclaiming that atomic power made their town prosperous. The Guardian provides an excellent gallery of pictures providing a visual insight into the worst atomic disaster in 25 years. The human, environmental and economic costs have been staggering and what the future holds remains deeply concerning. Words can only do so much as the actual photographs touch profounder meanings and understandings of the tragedies created by a system that ignores planetary constraints with its foolish neo-classical economic beliefs pushing exponential growth leading to the self-evident ultimate minimization of human life.

As much as these pictures convey an education into the aftermath of this event, they are also disturbing in many ways. There is a shot of a fisherman selling his catch at what appears to be a local market. His produce is covered by plastic for protection??? The first amoung many serious questions that strike the mind is, "WHO IS EATING THIS FISH?

"... what the future holds remains deeply concerning..."

#Bloomberg - #Detroit Gone to the Dogs (Video)

Detroit's recent bankruptcy filing places it at the top of our list of major economic events along with the other circumstances that surround it. To many these events go beyond the horrors of a Hollywood epic. Because we know they are real!

This is a great multi-media article using both a supporting video and slide show to provide a substantive visual sense of just how bad it is on the streets of Detroit these days. There are wild hungry dogs roaming the streets; painting a picture of a lost world at damnation's edge. Raving animals who have been left behind by stressed owners unable to neither care nor feed their once beloved pets. And certainly for many of these family pets, the cycle of life mirrors the destitution of their former or current caregivers.

Bloomberg's story is a good one, reminding us that there are so many ways to view this city's plight from a human, economic, social and political perspective. Emphasizing that the determiners we use have not been enough to warn us to hit the breaks, long before the train speeds over the cliff.

What can be learnt from this city's history - falling from the penthouse to the doghouse in less than a century? Where do we begin with our line of inquiry? Is there anything that can ever be done, particularly when global conditions are poised to worsen?

Many questions without easy answers - and perhaps hiding omens of things to come.

CLIMATE CHANGE - #China's Economy Overheated

CLIMATE CHANGE

CHINA'S ECONOMY OVERHEATED

A child cooks shrimp and an egg in a frying pan heated by a manhole cover on a hot summer day on 31 July 2013 in Jinan, China. It has been so hot that eggs are hatching without incubators and a highway billboard burst into flames in the worst heat wave in at least 140 years. Photo: China Daily / AP

Sometimes a pictures can tell us more than all the numbers and words combined together, as evidenced by our captioned photographic gem. China is experiencing its worst heat wave in 140 years, while the economic measures continue to move it on the path of unbridled growth, that contaminates the water and environment to the point where arable land for the nation of 1.4 billion people is also rapidly contracting. Without resources, lets not forget, there can be no economic outputs.

So do you think that there may be something wrong with our global economic doctrine? Can it be sustained? Perhaps this picture has a clue to these questions' answers.

No kidding, we guess Marc's finally starting to figure out what we have been saying for years. Sooner or later the abstract economy's - positive-sum game - is going to have to reconcile with the physical economy - a negative-sum game. The outcome of the imbalance correction will be brutal.

Or perhaps Marc picked up a copy of The Limits to Growth and discovered a practical application - Oprah calls it an "ah ha" moment when the penny finally drops.

Streets of Athens, Remember? Circa 1967???

As Dr Kinesa points out in his recent article, there is a lot of analysis and navel-gazing required to sort out the problems of both Greece and Detroit, who share many similarities. By the way, a better title may be "Greece, the New Detroit?"

Why don't we just state the obvious here? That is about the differences between recent economic successes of China and for some time Japan, and failures of centres; such as Detroit, Greece, Portugal and others. Imagine over the years, that the winners actually have had a "economic business plan" that they execute to, by using both free and centralised policies and tactics. ( seems they also better learn and apply MBA thinking?) Meaning that over reliance on "invisible market forces" to attain the optimal economic state is not a panacea, in fact, it is plain foolhardy - results speak for themselves.

Anyway, when a National Business Strategy is employed, it creates a different outcome because it focuses the nation or centre on simple stuff like; What can we do better then others? Where can we build long-term sustainable comparative advantages? And that's where all that weaknesses, strengths, opportunities and threats thinking occurs, breeding realistic paths forward.

Bottom line; we see that the winners are executing successful National Business Strategies that have little to do with whatever is trending in the Schools of Economics. Imagine!

That's our short take on it - but never forget what you paid for free advice.

Hard to believe that is was almost fifty years ago that the streets of Detroit were the centre of civil rights riots in America. Even then, the city was gasping to survive as an exodus of people, industry and jobs was well underway. Nothing was done back then, or since, to turn the tide, so Detroit simply continued to crumble into the destitute urban wasteland pictured today.
Other countries and cities should pay close attention to what happened here - and why comparisons to Nauru and Easter Island are really not that far-fetched. The question becomes when will we ever wake up?

Streets of Detroit - 2012
When did it really go Bankrupt???

Lets see if we can make sense of this. Now let's say China holds 1trillion in 10 year bonds and decides to cash or redeem their whole position. What could possibly happen? The Fed wires a one trillion freshly printed electronic dollars to China and takes back the bonds. So instead of holding an IOU due in ten years it now holds an IUO that is due on demand - albeit it is less than 10% of  US's GDP or in other words all the goods and services output of the US economy for one month. Not much by some measures.

Anyway, now if China decides to convert these dollars immediately to other currencies it actually shoots itself in the foot because by depressing the US dollar they make their exports substantially more expensive to American consumers. Demand for Chinese goods would collapse in the US, that could shut down China's domestic manufacturing causing massive unemployment, and in turn social unrest followed by political change. Somehow it is hard to find a winner in such drama and both sides are thus inter-dependent - strange bedfellows indeed! .

There is a lesson - the best credit terms maybe negotiated by the creditor's biggest debtor - so borrow a lot! But somehow, Ben Franklin and Shakespeare's  wisdom also seems to ring true: neither a borrower nor lender be...

Or, just tell them to go fly a kite

In the end, this a funny money game where the on-going idea is to keep the process going, regardless of the final outcomes. The outcome is the same as anyone playing musical chairs - when the music stops someone gets left holding the bag. This is obvious as when resources are depleted money in  all forms won't buy much.
