Ecuador signs permits for oil drilling in Amazon's Yasuni national park

Companies could start extracting oil underneath key biodiversity reserve on Earth by 2016

(theguardian.com) – Drilling for oil in a part of the Amazon rainforest considered one of the most biodiverse hotspots on the planet is to go ahead less than a year after Ecuador's president lifted a moratorium on oil drilling there.
Last August, Rafeal Correa scrapped a pioneering scheme, the Yasuní Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) initiative, to keep oil in the ground under a corner of the Yasuní national park in return for donations from the international community.

He said only $13m (£8m) of the $3.6bn goal had been given, and that "the world has failed us", giving the green light to drilling.

On Thursday, environment minister, Lorena Tapia, said permits for drilling had been signed for the 6,500-square-mile reserve, known as block 43, and oil production might begin as soon as 2016.

The permits allow Petroamazonas, a subsidary of the state oil company, to begin construction of access roads and camps to prepare for drilling.

Esperanza Martinez, an environmental activist in Ecuador, was quoted in a leading national daily as saying Petroamazonas had a bad record on oil spills and it could not be trusted to drill safely in the Yasuní-ITT.

Earlier this month, Ecuador's government rejected a petition calling for abandoning plans for drilling in the area, saying the organisers had failed to get enough signatures to trigger a national referendum.

The petition's backers, YASunidos, accused the government of fraud after only 359,762 signatures of around 850,000 submitted were deemed genuine – the threshold for forcing a referendum is 583,323.

This should come as no surprise to anyone that the intellectual levels in the United States have been drifting lower over the past couple of decades. In fact. this trend plays havoc with demographers and media types who are constantly dumbing-down their programs and content in order to adjust to the lower common denominator. Why the shrinkage in brainpower? Numerous reasons exist; ranging from I and X toys, immigration demographics, costly elitist education, drug use, celebrity culture and poor diets, just to name a few. And in the long-run this trend will have serious economic, political, social and military implications. It is a National Security risk and huge economic disadvantage that cannot be fixed in a few years.

Beyond the tests.scoring and reported reasons maybe the deeper cause lies in the shrinkage of American leadership - the pictures captioned below tell a tale of a nation lacking in the quality of character, skills, knowledge and capabilities that its people deserve and who would act as role models for its future generations.

According to sources close to the matter, International Governments recently required all senior executives and editors at Rupert Murdoch's News Corp to undergo MRI brain scans in an effort to determine why they continue to deny all scientific evidence regarding Climate Change and counter the science with fabrications, falsehoods and propaganda. There apparently was a real fear, in the medical community, that a rare strain of pandemic virus had attacked their truthy prefrontal cortices which is a section located close to the inner brain's hippitatus colon, situated way below the mid-frontal lobes, near the APT orifice. The papers and networks included in the investigation were such notables as "The Wall Street Journal,"  "The Daily," "Financial Post" and  FOX News.

Reports were filed today by the Chief Neurosurgeons at an undisclosed New York clinic; everyone was pleased and ecstatic over the results. As you may have guessed by now, "there was nothing to report" So it is back to business as usual in the happy halls of News Corp, who can again continue to report and make-up scumbag stories based on nothing.

Seriously, countering this fictional reporting is the battle in the Canadian construction industry where tighter legislation is forcing developers to use more wood over concrete in their projects. In their public arguments, expressed in National Advertising, the Concrete Industry rightfully argued that given the increase in extreme weather conditions their product was much more capable of withstanding future severe weather conditions. Pointing to recent flood costs, associated with severe weather attributed to climate change in both Calgary and Toronto, the Insurance Bureau of Canada was also supportive of this industry's position, as follows:   

"Claim payouts from severe weather have doubled every five to ten years, since the 1980s"

But what should be perfectly clear, that outside the hoaky world of unprofessional tabloid journalism,  real industries and honest people are taking measures to deal with these climate change events. And they make no bones about the fact that it is real and that more can be expected. Remember, they all have real skin in the situation, not just words.
