What You Need To Know About The New Canadian Climate Change Report

 Usually, when scientists talk about the front lines of climate change, it calls to mind small island nations at risk of being flooded by rising sea levels. But when Environment and Climate Change Canada released Canada’s Changing Climate Report (CCCR) on April 1, it emphasized that Canada’s North has started melting. In other words, climate change has hit home.

It’s the first report from an initiative that Natural Resources Canada began in 2017 to assess how climate change is impacting the country—and what we should do next. The CCCR will lay the basis for future reports that will provide suggestions to mitigate the worst effects of climate change moving forward.

Unfortunately, it’s projected that Canada overall will warm at almost twice the global average regardless of what we do to fight it. (Oh, and Northern Canada has already warmed at three times the global rate.) On the brighter side, there are still ways to reduce future global warming. Here’s what you need to know.

Sixth #Species #Extinction - Who's Next?

EXTINCTION – Mammals on Death Row

Mankind is driving a mass extinction that could obliterate large swathes of life on Earth for millions of years, scientists have warned in a new study. The US National Academy of Sciences has published a report in its journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), on the 15 October called “Mammals diversity will take millions of years to recover from the current biodiversity crisis”.

The report speaks of the current sixth mass extinction of animal and plant species caused entirely by humans that is as severe as any of the previous five extinction events in the past 450 million years. It is moving so rapidly that natural evolution cannot keep up. This is horrifying. Although this has been known for some decades, Governments mostly do not care and the public at large is only now becoming aware of it. The period of time since the last mass extinction 66 million years ago, that killed the dinosaurs, is known as the ‘Age of Mammals. Our own species is a child of this age. Most mammal species, just like us, give birth to live offspring, have females that secrete milk for the nourishment of the young and live in family based communities.

t was Nobel Prize winning Dutch chemist, Paul Crutzen, who coined the term ‘Anthropocene’ (The Age of Humans) to represent this human dominated geological epoch. He put forward his arguments in a short essay published in the journal Nature called the Geology of Mankind in January 2002. His argument was based on the following facts:

• Human activity has transformed between a third and a half of the land surface area of the planet
• Most of the world’s major rivers have been dammed or diverted
• Fertiliser plants produce more Nitrogen than is fixed naturally by terrestrial ecosystems
• Fisheries production remove more than a third of the primary production of the oceans coastal waters
• Humans use more than half of the world’s readily accessible fresh water runoff

The 5th Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction, also known as the K-T extinction, occurred 66 million years ago and it annihilated 76% of all plant and animal species on Earth. This is the mass extinction that also killed off all the dinosaurs. It was caused by an asteroid hitting the planet at the Yucatan Peninsula that separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea. The bolide was travelling at seventy thousand kilometres per hour and coming in at a low trajectory from the southeast. It hit the ground as a plane landing and blasted into the air more than fifty times its own size in pulverized rock. A vast cloud of searing vapour and debris raced over North America, vapourising everything in its path. All this sulphur laden ejected debris had two major catastrophic effects. Firstly as it fell back to Earth through the atmosphere it incandesced scorching the surface of the Earth and secondly the sulphur blocked the rays of the sun depressing global temperatures and catapulted the earth into a perennial winter.

Morgan Freeman Converted His 124-Acre Ranch Into A Giant Honeybee Sanctuary To Save The Bees

Morgan Freeman, the actor, film director and philanthropist has added a new title to his name: Beekeeper. The 81-year-old celebrity decided to convert his 124-acre Mississippi ranch into a bee sanctuary.

Freeman's foray into beekeeping began in 2014, where he discussed his new hobby with Jimmy Fallon during The Tonight Show. Freeman had taken up beekeeping just a couple of weeks before appearing on the show and talked about his experience keeping bees and the need to preserve and save wild bees for healthy environments.

As part of his interview, Freeman talked a bit about the motivation as to why he began beekeeping. "There is a concerted effort for bringing bees back onto the planet…We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation..."

The Advent of Extreme Weather Events and Climate Tipping Points

According to Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, chief climate advisor to the European Union, “We’re simply talking about the very life support system of this planet”. As fascism and the horror of murderous hate crimes are on the rise, governments are presiding over runaway climate change leading toward mass extinctions of species, costing the lives of billions and the demise of much of nature, while children are protesting against the betrayal of their future.

Evidence based on early climates and on current global warming requires revision of the mostly-linear IPCC climate change trajectories proposed for the 21st to 23rd centuries (Figure 3). The polar ice sheets, acting as thermostats of the climate, are melting at an accelerated rate.

Polar temperatures have been rising at twice the rate of lower latitude zones, weakening the jet stream and the Arctic boundary, which are becoming increasingly undulated (Figure 4). This allows cold air masses to breach the boundary as they move southward, as happened recently in North America and Europe, while warm air masses migrate northward. As the large ice sheets are melting large pools of cold ice melt water are forming in the North Atlantic Ocean south and east of Greenland (Rahmstorf et al. 2015) (See this). The AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Ocean Circulation) is slowing down and the probability of future transient freeze event/s (stadials) lasting few decades or longer (Hansen et al. 2016) is increasing. The juxtaposition of polar-derived freezing fronts and tropics-derived warm air masses leads to a rise in extreme weather events (Figure 1).

Over Half of Samples of Kale Tainted With Possible Cancer-Causing Chemical

Nearly 70 percent of the produce sold in the U.S. comes with pesticide residues, according to EWG’s analysis of test data from the Department of Agriculture for our 2019 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™.

The most surprising news from the USDA tests reveals that the popular health food kale is among the most contaminated fruits and vegetables. More than 92 percent of kale samples had two or more pesticide residues detected, and a single sample could contain up to 18 different residues. The most frequently detected pesticide, found on nearly 60 percent of kale samples, was Dacthal, or DCPA – classified by the Environmental Protection Agency since 1995 as a possible human carcinogen, and prohibited for use in Europe since 2009.

 

Overall, the USDA found 225 different pesticides and pesticide breakdown products on popular fruits and vegetables Americans eat every day. Before testing, all produce was washed and peeled, just as people would prepare food for themselves, which shows that simple washing does not remove all pesticides.

Unsurvivable heatwaves could strike heart of China by end of century

The deadliest place on the planet for extreme future heatwaves will be the north China plain, one of the most densely populated regions in the world and the most important food-producing area in the huge nation.

New scientific research shows that humid heatwaves that kill even healthy people within hours will strike the area repeatedly towards the end of the century thanks to climate change, unless there are heavy cuts in carbon emissions.

“This spot is going to be the hottest spot for deadly heatwaves in the future,” said Prof Elfatih Eltahir, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, who led the new study. The projections for China’s northern plain are particularly worrying because many of the region’s 400 million people are farmers and have little alternative to working outside.

UN Report: #SOCIETY AT RISK; URGENT #CLIMATE ACTION NEEDED

A comprehensive United Nations report released on Wednesday found that while global human health is under dire threat from the climate crisis and industrial pollution, there is still a window for bold and urgent action if world leaders would but seize it.

"We are at a crossroads. Do we continue on our current path, which will lead to a bleak future for humankind, or do we pivot to a more sustainable development pathway? That is the choice our political leaders must make, now."

The United Nations Environment Programme's Sixth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-6), described as the most rigorous climate assessment released by the international body in the last five years, warned that continued inaction from policy-makers could result in millions of premature deaths from air pollution and other factors throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Africa by mid-century.

The report also highlighted rapidly increasing rates of species extinction.
